  • Natural Ovens 100% Whole Grain Bread
So why do I use these products?  Because they are the cleanest products I have found.  Does that mean they are the best options, possibly not, but they are the best options I have found in my area.  I have also chosen the milk and eggs based on how the animals these products come from are treated.  It is important to me that our food comes from animals that are happy and healthy.  I, personally, feel that this is important for two reasons.  First, the animals are living beings and deserve some sense of life.  Second, I feel that the way the animals are treated is a direct reflection of how the farmers treat their customers.  If a farmer choses profits over the health and welfare of their animals then I question if they would put profits over my own health as well.

Next week, I am going to highlight a farm I heard of recently from my cousin.  This farm treats their animals humanely and I got the chance to talk to the owner back in January about her thoughts and how she came to own a humane farm.

How are we becoming more clean?

The last couple of weeks I talked about why we are trying to be more clean and touched on some of the companies we have found and now love that are clean(er).  This week I want dive a little deeper into these companies and highlight some of the products we use on a regular basis.

Young Living - this is the company that started it all.  I chose to use Young Living because of their Seed to Seal promise.  Basically, they can follow their oils from the seed and soil it's planted in all the way through until the bottle is sealed.  This is what initially sold me on the company, but as I've learned more and more about company I now love everything about it.  YL is not just essential oils.  They have essential oil infused products for every room of the home, and for just about every personal product you'd need as well.  There are so many oils we use that I can't even begin to name them all.  I am just starting to dabble into the supplements, but use NingXia Red, Super B, Super C, and MightyPro regularly.  Household product wise, I do a lot of diy using both straight essential oils and oil infused products.  I like to use their Shower Base Gel, KidScents Shampoo and KidScents Bath Gel as bases for my own shampoos and bath gels.  We also use several of their soap bars.  I clean my entire house with the Thieves Household Cleaner, adding vinegar or baking soda as needed for tough stains.  The dish soap and laundry soap are staples in our house too.

Oberweis - technically we actually started using Oberweis before we started with Young Living, but it didn't start me on the whole clean living journey.  For some reason I understood the need to get rid of hormones in my daughter's milk, but nothing else.  I liked Oberweis for a couple of reasons.  First, they are local, they started in Aurora, IL and we live about 40 miles east of there.  Second, they deliver - at the time (and still today) that was huge, my daughter was still a toddler and went through milk like crazy so having it delivered and not having to run out to the store was huge for me.  Third, they reuse their glass bottles.  I loved that they were not only respecting the health of their consumers but also the planet by reusing glass bottles instead of everything being in single use plastic.  And lastly, I love that they partner with small local farms that treat their cows humanely.

WildTree - This company was new to me.  A friend of mine from college introduced me to WildTree in September 2020.  I had never heard of them before, but the more I researched I liked what I saw.  All of their products are allergen free (though the specific allergen varies by product) and everything is organic.  That is what drew me to the company and since then I have gotten rid of all of my old spices (to be honest, most were long expired and needed to go anyway) and replaced most with WildTree.  My favorites are the Garlic and Herb Blend, Italian Salad Dressing, and the Absolutely Onion Blend.

These are the main companies I get all of my products from.  That does not mean everything comes from these three companies.  I still get the majority of my groceries at Walmart or Meijer.  I'm so happy to see these stores expanding their organic and clean product selections.

Next week, I'm going to write more about some specific products we use.  What are your favorite clean products/companies?

Why clean eating?

What exactly does clean eating mean?  For my family it means trying to eat out less, cooking from scratch more and when I do use packaged foods, making sure they contain as many pure ingredients as possible.  I try not to use bread with processed flour in it, opting for sprouted flours instead (such a Ezekiel Bread).  I bread chicken nuggets in almond or coconut flour rather than traditional all purpose flour.   We have tried to eliminate all spices and condiments that contain anything other than organic spices.  For example my Garlic & Herb Spice Blend from WildTree is just that, organic garlic, parsley, dill, and basil, that's it -- no maltodextrin, not nitrates/nitrites, or artificial colors/additives.
So what chemicals should we be trying to avoid the most?  According to an article by Harvard Medical School's Harvard Health Blog some of the major chemicals to avoid (especially for children) are:
  • Bisphenols, such as BPA. They can act like the hormone estrogen and interfere with puberty and fertility. Bisphenols can also increase body fat, and cause problems with the immune system and nervous system. They are found in the lining of food and soda cans, plastics with the number 3 or 7, and cash register receipts, among other places. They used to be found in plastic baby bottles and sippy cups; while this has been banned, older bottles and cups may still contain them.
  • Phthalates. These can also act like hormones, interfering with male genital development, and can increase the risk of obesity and cardiovascular disease. They are ubiquitous, found not just in plastic packaging, garden hoses, and inflatable toys, but also in things like nail polish, hairsprays, lotions, and fragrances.
  • Perfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFCs). They can lead to low-birthweight babies, as well as problems with the immune system, the thyroid, and fertility. They are commonly found in grease-proof paper, cardboard packaging, and commercial household products such as water-repellent fabric and nonstick pans, among other places.
  • Perchlorate. This chemical also interferes with thyroid function, and can disrupt early brain development. It’s found in some dry food packaging — it’s used to decrease static electricity — and sometimes in drinking water.
  • Artificial food colors. These have been found to increase symptoms in children who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. They are found in all sorts of food products, but especially those marketed for children.
  • Nitrates and nitrites. These can interfere with the thyroid, as well as with the blood’s ability to deliver oxygen to the body. They can also increase the risk of certain cancers. They are used to preserve food and enhance its color. They are commonly found in processed foods, especially meats.
I know there is so many more chemicals to avoid and so much more I have to learn about clean eating, but I like the start we have here and just keep reminding myself that everything is a work in progress.   Next week I will write a little more about what companies we use and programs I follow to help with this journey.

What to avoid when going clean

So what exactly are these chemicals I'm talking about getting out of our house when I'm talking about going clean?  So many of the products we use have ingredients that we just really don't want in our bodies, or at least not in the concentrations that end up accumulating in our bodies after days/weeks/months/years of use.

The top 7 ingredients to look out for are:

Formaldehyde - This is a preservative that is often seen in lotions, cosmetics, and baby wipes. It’s a known carcinogen and can cause skin and respiratory irritations.

Phthalates - These are a group of chemicals found in personal care products and many plastics and vinyls. They can affect your endocrine system, reproductive health, and even potentially cause cancer.

VOCs - Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gases that are emitted into the air. They’re found in some building materials, home and personal products, gasoline, and even things like glue and permanent markers. Breathing VOCs can cause eye, nose and throat irritation as well as difficulty breathing and nausea, even damage to the central nervous system and other organs. Some VOCs can even cause cancer.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) - These are surfactants commonly used as an emulsifying cleaning agent in household cleaning products (laundry detergents, spray cleaners, and dishwasher detergents). In other words they keep things mixed up and help them create lather. Oftentimes they are synthetically derived and have the potential to cause skin irritation.

Ethanolamines (MEA, DEA, and TEA) - These are found in many household and personal care products and have been linked to organ system toxicity, bioaccumulation, and even cancer.

Triclosan - This is found in many antibacterial soaps, hand sanitizers, and detergents as well as some toothpastes, deodorants, cosmetics, plastics, and more. It can affect the thyroid and endocrine system and was recently banned by the FDA to be used in “antiseptic washes” but can still be found in some other products like toothpaste, cosmetics, and even clothing, kitchenware, furniture, and toys.

Fragrance - The word “fragrance” can appear on a label and contain an enormous list of ingredients that a company is not required to disclose, as it is considered a ‘trade secret.’ That means a product could contain some awful ingredients and the consumer wouldn’t even know! These chemicals could be linked to cancer, reproductive and developmental toxicity, allergies and sensitivities. Why take the risk?

These are just a FEW of the ingredients we want to avoid in all of our products.  I was so disheartened to find a lot (in some cases all) of these ingredients in products we used everyday (sometimes multiple times a day).  For me it wasn't a hard decision to want to stop using all of these products immediately, but we had to be logical, we couldn't throw everything we owned out and just buy new.  But over time I have slowly replaced almost everything.  I mix my own shampoo and hand soap, we've switched out the laundry soap, dish soap, all of our household cleaners.

Recently I've begun to clean out our food too.  Next week I will look at the top ingredients to look out for in our food.

My Clean Living Story

How did I get started on this adventure?  I told a bit of my getting started story in my last blog post.  It started at a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) meeting in November 2017.   Between November 2017 and September 2020 I focused on getting the toxins out of our house through household products like our cleaners, shampoo, body wash, dish soap, and laundry soap.  In September 2020 I decided to join Rachel Maser in a Clean Food Challenge.  The idea behind Rachel's plan is that food should be as unprocessed when bought as possible.  Food should be raw, organic, no added preservatives, no sugar, meat should be grass-fed, antibiotic free, etc.  I love this idea, and it follows right along with what I've come to expect from Young Living with their Seed to Seal promise  and I have begun slowly switching our food products out.  For me it had to be a slow switch over, I could not justify throwing everything we own away, just like when we changed over all our shower products.  I have also started following my friend Gina Sullivan and her Mom's Full Plate Facebook Group and the best is she introduced me to WildTree.  WildTree is a company dedicated to providing organic (and most are preservative free) spices and sauces.  I am in love with their Garlic and Herb and Italian Dressing mix.  I am slowly trying new things and as this blog goes, I'll share with you what I'm doing, trying and loving.

Next I will talk a little about some of the chemicals that are in our products and foods that really really should not be, and why.

Clean living

Clean living
What does that mean to you?  To me it means getting as many toxic chemicals out of my life as possible.  I am still pretty new to this whole clean living idea.  For me it started 3 years ago at a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) meeting.  We had a speaker come in to talk about essential oils.  I wanted nothing to do with the topic, but as I sat there and listened something started to click for me.  You see at the time my son was about 9 months old, had already had his first surgery and was about 3 months away from his second.  He was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate.  It was not a hereditary birth defect, neither my husband nor I have anyone anywhere in our families that had cleft lip or palate.  So the doctors said it was an environmental defect, meaning I was exposed to something during the first 8 - 10 weeks of my pregnancy.  That scared me, but I also didn't really know what that meant or what to do about it.

As I sat there listening to Stacey talk about what made her start using essential oils and all the scary chemicals in our household and personal care products and food!  I wanted to do better for my family.  I realized that if I could do better for my kids from an early age, maybe they wouldn't have the health issues I have, or be so overly obese as I am, maybe just have an overall healthier life -- and healthy kids themselves one day.

So welcome to my first blog of the new year.  I am hoping to write at least one post every week about a topic I've become passionate about... Young Living, Clean Eating, Exercise, Preventable disease and Humane treatment of farm animals and more.
